Polyetherimide (PEI)
Product Features
It has excellent mechanical properties, electrical insulation properties, radiation resistance, high and low temperature resistance, and wear resistance, and can transmit microwaves. Adding glass fiber, carbon fiber, or other fillers can achieve the purpose of enhanced modification. It can also form heat-resistant polymer alloys with other engineering plastics, usable at -160~180℃.
Product Applications
◆ In the electrical and electronic industry, components made from polyetherimide materials have been widely used, including high-strength and dimensionally stable connectors, housings for standard and miniature relays, circuit boards, coils, flexible circuits, mirrors, and high-precision optical fiber components. Notably, replacing metal with this material to manufacture optical fiber connectors optimizes the component structure, simplifies manufacturing and assembly steps, and maintains more precise sizes, resulting in a cost reduction of about 40% for the final product.
◆ Impact-resistant sheet Ultem1613 is used to manufacture various components of aircraft, such as windows, nose components, seat backs, interior wall panels, door coverings, and various items for passenger use. Composites made of PEI and carbon fiber have been used in the structures of various components of the latest helicopters.
◆ Utilizing its excellent mechanical properties, heat resistance, and chemical resistance, PEI is used in the automotive field, such as for manufacturing high-temperature connectors, high-power vehicle lights and indicators, sensors for controlling the external temperature of the vehicle cabin (air conditioning temperature sensors), and sensors for controlling the temperature of air and fuel mixtures (effective combustion temperature sensors). Additionally, PEI can also be used as a vacuum pump impeller resistant to high-temperature lubricating oil erosion, for the ground glass joints of evaporators operating at 180℃ (connection interfaces), and as mirrors for non-illuminating fog lights.
◆ Polyetherimide foam plastic is used as insulation and soundproofing material for transportation machinery such as aircraft.
◆ PEI has excellent hydrolysis resistance, thus it is used for handles, trays, fixtures, prosthetics, medical lamp reflectors, and dental tools in surgical instruments.
◆ In the food industry, it is used for product packaging and trays for microwaves.
◆ PEI possesses excellent high-temperature mechanical properties and wear resistance, making it suitable for the production of valve components for water transport pipe steering valves. With its high strength, flexibility, and heat resistance, PEI serves as an outstanding coating and film-forming material, capable of creating coatings and films suitable for the electronics industry. Additionally, it can be utilized to manufacture microporous membranes with pore sizes less than 0.1μm and high permeability. Furthermore, it can also function as a high-temperature adhesive and high-strength fibers.
